Children Eye Exams (0-9)
Why It's Important
- Since 80% of learning in school is visual, vision problems can result in delayed developmental milestones and falling behind in grade level at school.
Recommendation
- The Canadian and American Optometric Associations recommend children have their first comprehensive eye exam at age 6-12 months, 3 years of age, and annually once school age.
Common Eye Conditions
- Amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (wandering eye), myopia (near-sightedness), hyperopia (far-sightedness), and astigmatism (oval-shaped eyes), are common eye conditions found in children.
What We Offer
- Our doctors offer the following myopia control treatment options: atropine drops, Hoya Miyosmart DIMS spectacle lenses.
Our Process
- During a child’s eye exam, their spectacle prescription will be measured, eye teaming will be evaluated, and eye health will be assessed. Children’s eye exams ensure the child’s eyes are healthy and developing normally, and that vision is adequate for school and learning.

Adult Eye Exams (20-64)
Why It's Important
- Eye exams can help detect asymptomatic eye disease and underlying systemic diseases including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cancer, stroke, and other neurological diseases
Recommendation
- The Canadian and American Optometric Associations recommend routine eye exams every two years for healthy adults
Common Eye Conditions
- Myopia/hyperopia/astigmatism (near-sighted/far-sighted/oval-shaped eyes), presbyopia (blurred reading vision after 40), computer vision syndrome, and dry eye, are common conditions affecting young to middle-aged adults
Our Process
- During a comprehensive eye exam, your spectacle prescription will be measured, your eye teaming will be evaluated, and your eye health will be assessed for eye disease.
Resources
- Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) recommends annual eye exam for adults with potentially sight-threatening conditions. To learn more about OHIP eye examination recommendations for adults with sight-threatening conditions and to see if you qualify, visit: https://ohipupdates.ca/
Diabetic Eye Exams
Why It's Important
- Diabetes patients are at risk for diabetic retinopathy (diabetic eye disease). Diabetes can damage retinal blood vessels resulting in bleeding and swelling in the retina causing permanent vision loss.
Recommendation
- The Canadian and American Optometric Associations recommend routine diabetic eye exams annually.
What We Offer
- Our clinic offers advanced retinal imaging that detects diabetic retinopathy in the earliest stage for timely treatment to preserve eyesight.
Our Process
- During a comprehensive diabetic eye exam, your spectacle prescription will be measured, your eye teaming will be evaluated, and your eye health will be assessed for diabetic retinopathy and other eye diseases
Senior Eye Exams (65+)
Why It's Important
- The risk for eye disease increases as we get older. Routine eye exams with advanced retinal imaging allow for early detection of eye disease. Early detection and treatment of eye disease is crucial for preventing permanent vision loss.
Recommendation
- Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) recommends seniors have routine eye exams once every 18 months. For seniors with diabetes or potentially sight-threatening conditions, OHIP recommends routine eye exams once every 12 months.
Common Eye Conditions
- Examples of potentially sight-threatening conditions include, but are not limited to: glaucoma, advanced cataracts requiring surgery, and macular degeneration. These are common eye conditions that occur over the age of 65.
Prevention
- Routine eye exams help detect underlying systemic diseases, including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cancer, stroke, and other neurological diseases.
